THE COFFEE GIANTS

Coffee originates from Ethiopia, a country located in the central part of the African continent. However, the biggest propagators of the culture of the product around the world were the Arabs. Thanks to them, coffee arrived in Europe in the 14th century, but it was only around 1615 that it began to be widely consumed by Europeans. Until then, only the Arabs had mastered the cultivation techniques.

Germans, French and Italians sought at all costs to know the secrets of the plant, but it was the Dutch who discovered them, growing their seedlings in the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden in Amsterdam. After that, coffee finally became a habit in European culture.

The growing European consumer market led to the expansion of coffee plantations in African countries and its arrival in the New World. Through the hands of the colonizers, coffee arrived in Suriname, in Santo Domingo, in Cuba, in Puerto Rico and in the Guyanas. It was through the Guianas that he arrived in northern Brazil. In this way, the secret of the Arabs spread to all corners of the world.

The world’s largest coffee producers are Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Indonesia, Vietnam, Ivory Coast, India, Uganda and Ethiopia. Brazil is the world leader in product exports with around 32% of the international market. Regarding the consumer market, we are the 2nd country in the world, behind only the USA.
